Seasonal Skincare 101: How to Protect Your Skin in Colder Months
As autumnal pumpkin spice season is making its way through to icey winter, the drop in temperature often signals a shift not just in our wardrobes, but also in our skincare routines. While cosy scarves and warm coats protect us from the elements, our skin is left vulnerable to a range of environmental factors during the colder months - making seasonal skincare essential.
This time of year is beautiful for many reasons, but often this is when skin struggles the most. Understanding how the skin reacts to seasonal changes and adopting a targeted seasonal skincare routine can be key to maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion all year round. First, let’s start with what exactly is causing our skin to change…
One of the most immediate changes in colder months is the drop in humidity levels. Cold air tends to hold less moisture, leading to drier conditions that can take the moisture from your skin. As a result, the skin’s natural barrier weakens, leaving it prone to flakiness, dullness, and even irritation. Harsh winds and rain can also lead to chapped, rough skin especially on any areas of the body that is exposed (think face and hands) leaving them inflamed. These environmental stressors can also be exacerbated through indoor heating, which can leave the complexion feeling dry, tight and dehydrated.
Don’t worry, just because the colder months can be harsh on the skin doesn’t mean you need to hide away! Some simple changes to your skincare routine can help keep your skin healthy and glowing all year long.
Moisturiser is key. Try switching to a richer, oil-based product that locks in moisture, and includes ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (did you know it has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water!) and ceramides for extra hydration. Products containing shea butter are also great to help feed the skin essential fatty acids, and vitamins, whilst soothing irritated skin.
Gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells can help improve skin texture and support skincare to penetrate deeper. Many clients opt for chemical peels during the winter months as people tend to spend less time outside and there is less risk of being exposed to sun burn. However, whatever you do, do not forget to wear SPF, it may not be beach season but UV rays are still prominent, and can still damage the skin even if there is no sun visible.
It is important to note that skincare isn’t just about what you apply on the surface. During winter, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water, as the cold temperatures reduce our thirst. However, staying hydrated from the inside is just as crucial as using topical products. Drinking plenty of water ensures your skin cells are hydrated and functioning properly.
